They are half way through the football season. There are over 100 teams in D1. Less than 40 still have a chance at the playoffs. To make the playoffs two losses will most likely be the cut-off point this year. Once again there was chaos all across college football. We will break them down and discuss who is in, who is out and what to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Down goes Texas, down goes Texas. For a program that has all the resources, the so called greatest recruiting pool to pull from there is no program that seems to get less from more. The Longhorns went into the Red-River game as a 7-point favorite. They left with one loss and many questioning if this team can make the playoffs. They have a legit defense but their offense led by Arch-Manning continues to struggle. You can point the finger at Arch and he did throw to interceptions at key parts of the game but why is it that now two 5* quarterbacks have struggled to have success at Texas? Where is the development of these guys?

Georgia vs. Alabama – Does not matter what decade this game is played. The 90’s, the 2000’s or now. These two play great defense, usually play physical football and the games come down the wire. Georgia is the most physically impressive team we have watched this year. Their OL does not look real. Guys are massive and they move people. Tackle Juan Gaston is massive. Just keep your eye on him the next time you watch a Georgia football game. He is quite impressive and should be a high draft pick once he is eligible. For Bama they may have been screwed by the lack of non-call on what looked like a PI late in the game. Don’t worry Bama fans you still could lose 2-3 games before the Playoff committee even considers not putting you in the field of 12. All kidding aside did you ever see a player get a penalty for sportsmen like late in a game to cost Bama a chance to win under Nick Saban? Bama leading rusher was Trae’shawn Brow (9-rushes for 90 yards), Quarterback Keelon Russell had the second most rushing yards with 41. Georgia ran 39 times for 206 yards. You look at who won the rushing totals it will tell you who won the game. Georgia dominated up front in the trenches. This is becoming a trend between these two teams.

The best team no one is talking about, Oregon State. They put up over 60 points yesterday on San Diego State. Quarterback Braden Atkinson threw for over 400 yards and had five touchdowns. Freshman receiver Jesse Legree is about to get paid. He is one of the best receivers in the country. He is a legit sub-4.4 type receiver and he runs very good routes. He has close to 1,000 yards on the season.

Nebraska – They have finally turned the corner under Coach Matt Ruhle. Nebraska fans should be happy today. Yes the Huskers lost but for the first time in over a decade if not longer the program is finally back to being a legit contender. When we discussed during the pre-season with a Huskers beat writer about the team running back Jamal Rule was mentioned. We talked about him showing the traits of some of the great backs who came through Lincoln. He is averaging over 7.0 yards a carry.

USC – Amazing how two weeks ago all the so called college football experts and fans of the Trojans wanted to run Lincoln Riley out of town. His team starts 6 freshman. Most of them who will be playing on Sundays. This is a young team that had to learn how to win. They found a way to beat Washington last week and now went on the road in front of 100k fans and beat Penn State. Yeah USC fans keep being idiots thinking that you can get better than Lincoln Riley. To take a quote from Rick Pitino, Pete Carroll is not walking through those doors.

When Oregon head coach Dan Lanning sucked up to Bob Chesney of UCLA did he know what was facing him on the other sideline when Oregon played UCLA? The Bruins who have been terrible for over a decade how found their head coach. Bob Chesney took UCLA into Eugene and upset the Ducks. This team has holes and is not elite but UCLA is finding ways to win. He has done a phenomenal job. Outside of the job being done in Corvallis, Chesney is up for coach of the year honors. UCLA is going to do some damage this year in the BIG 10.

Gator nation – Two weeks ago they were on top of the world. Now losses to both Missouri and South Carolina their fan base thinks they hired the wrong guy. Nah…they hired the right guy but the fan base needs to be fired. The Gators were 4-8 last year. They were not a good football team. Their new head coach had to change the culture. The Gator Nation should look down in Coral Gables and see what happens the first couple years under a coach who had to tear it down before building it back up. UF is under the right coach. ST (blank) up already and let the process work itself out. Not every program is Indiana. It takes time to build it right. I believe UF hired the right guy.

UP NEXT – Week 7 Match-ups…..

UGA vs. Auburn

Notre Dame vs. BYU

Indiana vs. Ohio State

Alabama vs. Tennessee

Each week is a playoff….UGA can solidify its spot at the top of the polls if they now go and beat Auburn. The Tigers in year one under Alex Golesh are still trying to find their way. They are still a tough out and we expect Georgia coming off an emotional win to have a bit of a letdown next week. Notre Dame plays vs. BYU….A win by BYU and they will most likely be in the playoffs. Indiana vs. Ohio State…The Buckeyes play a team on a 20 plus game win streak. The Hoosier’s have not looked the same. I expect the Buckeyes to be all in…They lose to IU and they would be on the verge of not making the playoffs.

FSU vs. Miami week….(crickets). Game always meant something other than this year. Sad. FSU comes off a bad loss against Louisville. They sit at 3-3.

Heisman Trophy Leader – Jeremiah Smith – Back to back years a South Florida player wins the award. May as well hand it to him now.

Elite Scouting Playoff Poll

UGA (SEC)

Notre Dame (Independent)

Indiana (BIG 10)

Miami (ACC)

5.
