You had a major upset when Jacksonville Raines pulled off a last minute victory over Miami Northwestern. Not sure if those around Miami Northwestern are still over the loss. The Bulls were the better team from a talent standpoint but Raines made the plays when they needed to.

Not to be outdone was the Hail Mary by Notre Dame Quarterback Noah Grubbs who launched the pass to his receiver to only have it grabbed away from his teammate to win the game. Vero Beach outplayed Lake Mary for 45 minutes but games are 48 minutes and that is why you must play till the end. Great job by Lake Mary as they won their first state title in school history. Coach Scott Perry is someone that ESS has known for a long time and we are happy he finally was able to hoist the trophy.

We would also like to congratulate Cardinal Newman Head Coach Jack Daniels. For years he had success at Palm Beach Dwyer HS. He moved over the Newman and had to take on the football giant known as Hollywood Chaminade. The Lions had owned Newman until this year. Thanks to the performance of QB Jyron Hughley, Cardinal Newman was able to get over the hump.

The best team in the playoffs was probably Cardinal Mooney. Their early season loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas is the main reason why we had the Raiders ahead in the final poll. Mooney led by QB Davin Davison was quite impressive.

A few years back we stepped on the campus of West Boca High School. There was a new sheriff in charge named Dylan Potts. West Boca had no history of ever being an elite program in football. A few years later, West Boca now has two state championships. Potts is quickly becoming one of the best coaches in the state of Florida. As Curt Cignetti said’ “GOOGLE ME”. Potts can say the same thing. He has proven himself as a head coach. Not to be outdone Roger Harriott at Saint Thomas has won another state title. The Raiders continue their impressive run on State Championships over the past decade.

Now on to college football….

I know….People are going to complain about the G5 programs like James Madison and Tulane being in the playoffs. Did we not hear these same complaints about TCU being run off the field by Georgia. In time these games will level out. James Madison and Tulane are not the issue. They both played by the rules. If the ACC had actually done their job and had teams like FSU and Clemson play to their level this year we would not be having this discussion. There are 12 spots and the only team who really had an argument of being in the playoffs was Notre Dame. I don’t want to hear the cries from Texas. Yes, they play in the SEC – BUT….Lets be real. They have advantages in NIL, recruiting base, the brand of Texas and more money than any other program. You want to be in – WIN….Don’t lose to Florida on the road who had a losing record. I personally don’t think Bama should have been in. Yes they won their game at OU this past weekend but when they were down 17-0 did you think maybe we got it wrong. Congrats for them coming back but what are the odds they throw a pick six, have a punter totally whiff the ball and have refs who watch not only false starts but tackles actually tacking defensive ends from OU and not call them.

Oregon – I feel Dan Lanning has built a very good program in Eugene – That being said the defense that gave up over 500 yards and 30 plus points to James Madison is not getting past next weekend if they don’t figure out that side of the football. Oregon got a lucky draw landing James Madison in round one. Texas Tech has an elite defense and they can score on every possession. The Red-Raiders don’t have the pressure on them. Oregon offense is elite.

Mario Cristobal – LOL – He can’t win the big game. This has to be the worst take of all time in college football. He is now 21-5 in the past two seasons at Miami. His team just won the biggest game since 2001 when they beat Nebraska for their last National Title. It is time to give this man his props. He could have taken the easy route when he first got to Miami and loaded up with Portal Players. NOPE….He went and recruited the very best on the offensive and defensive lines. That is where games are won and lost…Go ask Coach Mike Elko how good Miami is up front. They have a chance next week against Ohio State. Don’t think they can’t implement the same game plan IU did two weeks ago. Miami has better athletes on offense as well. Miami is BACK!!!!!

Fernando Mendoza – Columbus HS grad win the Heisman Trophy. For all the great players who have come through the 305, he is the first one to bring home the award. That is quite impressive. I am biased towards Dade County and the players like Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Willis McGahee, Dalvin Cook and he is the first one ever to bring home the crown. Congrats to a very good football player. He is proof that hard work pays off. I will always praise those who come from Miami. He is a great story for college football. IU is legit and they are one program I think most would not mind seeing them hoist the National Championship Trophy.

Gators Head Coach – Jon Sumrall – While Tulane got beaten pretty badly by Ole Miss in the playoffs, I think the Gators got this head coaching hire right. You look at a coach and who he hires. His hires at both the offensive and defensive coordinator spots feel like home-runs. If they put together a staff full of guys who can move up eventually to head coaching spots and coordinators than he will have a ton of success in Gainesville. That roster has talent, now they just need to put it all together.

Coaching Hires – Love the hire of Brian Hartline at USF. Young guy….recruits at an elite level. Has a history of putting players in the NFL. I know fans love to talk about scheme and coaches ability to GAME DAY coach but you need players. Alex Golesh was able to get good players at USF and they won. I feel the same about Hartline. He should be able to keep USF relevant in the grand scheme of things….Good luck Coach Hartline.

Last week was the end of the high school football season.
