Mainland is more then OJ Ross!
ESS continues our Inside the Huddle look at Daytona Mainland High School. The Buccaneers were a very talented team this year. The names discussed the most from Daytona Mainland were Ricardo Allen-CB (2010) and OJ Ross-WR-(2010). Both prospects have committed to the University of Purdue. Not only are those guys big time prospects these players should not be overlooked, Kenneth Kirksey-DT-(2010), Quinn Bell-Ath.-(2010), Chevin Davis-WR-(2010), Anthony Hamm-LB-(2010), Antwone McGuire-Ath.(2010), Marlin Lane-RB-(2011)-committed to Clemson, Cortez Davis-DB-(2011)-committed to Clemson, Telvin Hooks-RB-(2011) and Leonard Williams-DL-(2012). All of these prospects have a chance to become very good at the next level.
This years class of cornerbacks is one of the best ever in Florida. You have cornerbacks like Terrence Mitchell, Lamarcus Joyner and Jaylen Watkins leading the charge. One prospect that should not be overlooked is Ricardo Allen. He brings you a cornerback prospect that does not mind coming up and playing the run. For his size, Allen is very physical. He also gives you a cornerback that has very good coverage skills. While he lacks great size, Allen more then makes up for it with his toughness. (Video Link)
The state of Florida has some pretty good defensive tackles this season. One name you rarely here amongst the top players is Kenneth Kirksey. He had a very good senior season for Mainland. What we like about Kenneth is his ability to push the pocket. His play allows him linebackers to make a ton of plays. Kirksey is not real big (6′0). That is probably the one negative to Kirksey game. With so few quality defensive tackles, Kirksey should get some more looks as we get closer to NSD. (Video Link)
One of the prospects that has benefited with Kenneth in front of him is linebacker Antwone McGuire. He is another player who had a very good senior season. What we like about McGuire is how much emotion he plays with. He is the heart and sole of Mainland defense. When Mainland needed a big play it seemed like McGuire would come through. (Video Link)
Not only is McGuire overlooked so is Athlete Quinn Bell. The talented athlete makes plays on both sides of the football. Bell made an impact at quarterback and defensive back. He plays with great range on the defensive side of the football. On offense he will make plays with both his arm and legs. On defense Bell can make plays as a defensive back. Just get him on the field because Quinn will make an impact. (Video Link)
Anthony Hamm is another of the prospects on Mainland football team who gets overlooked. He plays linebacker and if there is one thing Hamm does is find the football. He is a sound tackler and rarely gets out of position to not make a play. Look for Hamm to get some looks after the New Year from some D1 and FCS programs. (Video Link)
When you discuss Mainland and receivers the first name to pop up is OJ Ross. Even though Ross is a big time prospect his teammate Chevin Davis should also be discussed. He is a bigger receiver then Ross without the game break speed. He shows good hands and runs solid routes. Davis is a match up problem for smaller defensive backs. What we like about Davis is his ability to go up and attack the football. (Video Link)
The class of 2010 was very good for Daytona Mainland. The 2011 class may end up even better. The first name to come to mind is Marlin Lane. He measures in at 6′0, 190 pounds. What Lane brings to the table is a big back with speed. He has the ability to make a big play anywhere on the field. He is both a threat in the run and passing game. He also makes his presence felt on special teams. He is one of the top prospects in the state of Florida for the class of 2011. (Video Link)
Not only is Lane a big time prospect so is his teammate Cortez Davis. He can play cornerback, safety or even receiver in college. For a cornerback over 6′2, Davis is very fluid. He can open up and run with backs or receivers. Usually cornerbacks with his size are stiff. That is not the case with Davis. (Video Link)
Along with Davis and Lane in the class of 2011 is Telvin Hooks. He is the backup to Lane. Hooks brings a back with the ability to get to the outside. He is more of an east/west running back while Lane does better between the tackles. Hooks also can help you out in the passing game. He is a very good receiver out of the backfield. (Video Link)
With 2010 and 2011 loaded classes for Mainland we also look at 2012. Leonard Williams is a prospect that should draw some early interest. He was a starter on a very talented Mainland football team. Here is an early look at the 2012 DE. (Video Link)
