Lake Nona QB Kevin Sousa makes name for himself!

When ESS covers the state of Florida we like to find some of the hidden gems that not too many fans or scouts talk about. When ESS recently went to Orlando they stopped by Lake Nona High. This is a new school that recently started their football program. While most new football programs struggle to get exposure that will not be the case with Lake Nona. They have  a potentially elite quarterback prospect in Kevin Sousa. The talented quarterback has only played a couple of years of organized football. When college coaches take a look at the talented star they will be heading over to Lake Nona more often. Sousa will draw attention to some of his other teammates. ESS breaks down the talented signal caller and gives you insight to what Sousa brings to the table.

What ESS likes about Sousa: First off you are talking about a quarterback that has great character. He is a leader on and off the field. Those are the types of qualities that all college scouts look for in a quarterback. Sousa main strength is his ability to break down a defense with his legs. With the way more and more teams are running the zone-read play, Sousa will fit in nicely with that style of offense. He is a threat from anywhere on the field as a running quarterback. Make no mistake though, while Sousa can run with the ball he is a quarterback. He has a very good arm and can make most of the throws asked of him. He is the type of quarterback that can drop back in the pocket and pick out his 2nd and 3rd option. His ability to beat a defense with both his arm and legs will make him a hot commodity come spring practice.

What he needs to work on: There is not a ton to not like about Sousa. He has the physical tools you want to see in a quarterback prospect. What he needs to work on is mechanics. He has a bit of a hitch in his throwing motion. This may cause him to be a little inconsistent throwing the football. It is not something that can’t be fixed. With his physical tools you overlook something like this in his game. If there is another thing Sousa will need to work on is his drops from center. He plays in an offense that has him in the gun most of the time. If he goes and plays in a pro-style offense his footwork will need some work.

Final Thoughts: Sousa is just another talented name to add to the mix. You have Jeff Driskel in Orlando that Sousa will compete with as the top quarterback prospect in Central Florida. It will be interesting to see how Sousa develops during spring football. He carries well over a 3.0 GPA so that is going to draw the attention of college scouts. Sousa is a prospect that we will keep an eye on and watch his progress between now and the end of his senior season.
