Fort Pierce Central is home to one of the more electrifying players in South Florida in athlete Tim Smith. We caught up with Head Coach Chris Hutchings to discuss what makes Smith such a coveted player and the schools that are involved in his recruitment.

“Tim is a kid that runs extremely well. He has good hands and a feel for the game. He is a great athlete and can play on either side of the ball. He has very good size. He is about 6-foot-2 ½ and 185 to 190 pounds.”

Smith played QB during his sophomore and junior seasons at Central, but made a position change for his senior season. “He was our QB for the past two seasons. We made a decision that we wanted to get him on the field more. He plays almost the entire game on offense, defense and special teams. On offense, he is our slot receiver. We have been trying to devise ways to get him the ball more. He runs the Jet Sweep for us in our Wildcat package. On defense, he plays cornerback and virtually shuts down that side of the field. He has been excellent at corner this season. He is also on kick return and punt return units”.

Smith has received attention and offers from many programs across the country. “Iowa State, Purdue, Michigan State, Rutgers, South Florida, FIU, Troy have all offered. He has been talking to Ole Miss some but I am not sure if they have offered yet. We have talked a bit about the four or five schools that are in the mix for official visits. Some of the ones he really talks about are South Florida, Rutgers, Iowa State and Purdue”.

Rutgers has appeared to turn up the heat for Smith. “I have spoken to Coach Jenkins about four times in the last month. Tim is looking to visit there in early December”.

It seems Smith is taking a thought out approach to the recruiting process. “He told me he is looking for the right fit. I thought he could have been a kid that was looking for the big splash. That he may look at schools with all the bells and whistles. But he is looking at where he fits most comfortable and he can best be utilized and developed. He looks like he will make his decision for all the right reasons and I am proud of him for that”.
