Dunlop kicks game winner in overtime to beat rival Homstead 13-10!

Dunlop kicks game winner in overtime to beat rival Homstead 13-10!

When Palmetto and Homestead met last night it was a battle between two district rivals. Palmetto came into the game needing a win to keep their playoff chances alive. Homestead will now have to win out and have some luck to make it to the playoffs themselves. In a district that is as tough as any in Florida this was a game that could go down as one of the best of 2009. In regulation both teams fought hard and finished the 2nd half tied 10-10. In overtime Homestead lined up to kick the game winning field goal. What happened next was a strange and it could have cost Palmetto the win. Homestead decided to kick a field goal on third down. Their kick was blocked by Palmetto and the Panthers started to celebrate. The refs ruled that the kick was blocked behind the line of scrimmage and Homestead got to attempt another kick on 4th down. Their final kick went wide left and Palmetto had a new lease on life. On their next possession Homestead made some mistakes which cost them and they had to throw up a hail marry on 4th and 25. When Palmetto got the ball back Head Coach Larry Coffey decided to kick the ball on first down. He sent senior kicker Dylan Dunlop out to win the game. Dunlop did the job as his kick went right down the middle of the uprights and Palmetto won 13-10.

Two years ago I was asked by a talent evaluator to watch film on Miami’s Columbus Explorers football team. Columbus had one of the best DT in the nation in Antwan Lowery. After watching the film, I was impressed with Lowery’s sheer size and ability to run sideline to sideline. But there was another young man that really jumped out at me.

Kevin Grooms after his 200 total yard performance against McArthur!

Kevin Grooms after his 200 total yard performance against McArthur!

ESS was on hand to witness one of the best performances of the week. Athlete Kevin Grooms impacted the game in every way imaginable. On defense he had 4 tackles and 3 pass breakups. On offense, he had a scintillating touchdown. He tallied over 200 yards of total offense and the game winning punt return. He pretty much did it all for South Broward as they pulled the upset over cross-town rival McArthur High. Grooms is one of the best players for the class of 2011 that ESS has covered this fall. We will continue to monitor him each week. Look for his offer sheet to grow by the time spring football rolls around. Take a look at his highlights from South Broward’s game against McArthur.  (Watch Video)

Jeff Luc has an impressive game with double digit tackles!

Ft. Pierce Central and Treasure Coast High Schools are quickly becoming rivals. They fought hard all night long before Treasure Coast iced the game late in the 2nd half with a block punt that gave them a double digit lead. Junior defensive tackle Jephte Leveille came up with the block punt which led to the final points being scored. One thing is for certain these were two teams that had plenty of talent on display.

Olympic Heights Defense getting instructions from Head Coach Henghold and his assistant coaches!

On Thursday night ESS made the trip up to Palm Beach county to check out Boynton Beach vs. Olympic Heights. Both teams came into the game with much to prove. Olympic Heights running back Batelmy Exil led the Olympic Heights offense with over 140 yards on 16 carries. He was not the only one to have success running the football. Tavon Jenkins also helped out the rushing attack for Olympic Heights. On the night Olympic Heights rushed for 221 yards on 48 carries. Every single one of those carries helped them to a 27-26 victory. For Boynton Beach they were handed another close loss. They were led by Marcus Davis who is only a freshman. His 340 yards passing the football and two touchdowns helped keep the game close. If not for his performance Boynton Beach would have lost the game by a wider margin.

South Broward pulls off upset over McArthur!

Djwany Mera and Trevaughn Fairclough make impact in win over McArthur!

Who would have thought that when this game was scheduled that both  South Broward and McArthur Mustangs would be unbeaten? Last nights game between the two rivals was for positioning in the race for 2nd place in their district. With Saint Thomas the clear district favorite, both teams knew the importance of this match up.

McArthur pretty much dominated the game. After a torrid start, McArthur took a 26-14 lead into the 4th quarter. Thing is games in high school are 48 minutes long and not 46. After a questionable touchdown, McArthur received the ball with less than three minutes to play and a five point lead.

McArthur then tried to milk the clock. They ran the clock down to less than 30 seconds before taking a time out to set up a punt. What happened next was an ugly sight for any Mustang fan. Back at his own 20 yard line, South Broward’s Kevin Grooms fielded the punt and took it back 80 yards for the winning touchdown. That single play changed the district landscape! The McArthur staff and players were stunned. With what should have been an easy win, the Mustangs now have to regroup and hope for a miracle win over Saint Thomas.

Michael Lee Harris helps pull out win for Northwestern!

Michael Lee Harris helps pull out win for Northwestern!

When Central’s 2009 football schedule was announced, they circled the game against Miami Northwestern. This was a game that Central had wanted to play since last years playoffs. The Rockets had the better team on paper for the first time in years. With Seniors in quarterback Jeff Godrey, running back Brandon Gainer and receiver Joshua Reese returning it looked like Central would finally get over the hump.
