Sling and Shoot.
When Skip Holtz took over at USF one of the events many wondered if it would still be around was Sling and Shoot. With over 40 teams in attendance this weekend, USF once again had one of the better 7-on-7 events around. Tampa Jefferson, Tampa Plant, Naples, Sarasota Riverview, Fort Meade, Plant City, Land O Lakes, Ocala Vanguard, Venice, Lake Wier, Dunedin, Chiles, Tarpon Springs, East Lake, Wharton, Coral Reef, Hallandale, Cardinal Mooney, South Sumter, Spoto and Jesuit were just some of the teams who showed up. ESS was there and we will give you a breakdown of the prospects that really showed up.
Look to the future: Bennie Coney-Plant City-Coney will be one of the top quarterbacks to come out of Florida next year. He has all the physical tools you want in a quarterback (size, speed, athletic ability and arm strength). What really impressed us is how patient he was throwing the football. Coney will make all the throws asked of him. He also seemed to have command of his team. Coney is a name that recruiting fans will get used to over the next couple of years.
His teammates Lamarlin Wiggins and Atwon Armstrong also impressed us. These are also two names that fans of recruiting will start hearing plenty of over the next two years. All three plant city prospects are part of the class of 2012.
Kenneth Williams-Vanguard-The recently committed prospect to Florida State shined at the camp on Sunday. He made some impressive catches on offense and shut down his side of the field on defense. Williams committed to Florida State but with performances like Sunday you can bet plenty of teams will try and make his switch his commitment between now and the time the 2012 class has to sign.
Once again one of the stars of this weekend was Andre Davis of Jefferson High. He along with the rest of his Jefferson team will be very good in 2010. Two of his teammates did not play this weekend in Ramik Wilson and Chris Moore. The star of the Jefferson team this weekend was Rashard Dunnegan. He was quite impressive and probably the most consistent player on their team. He is a 2011 prospect who should receive some interest this fall.
Coutryside High had three impressive performers this weekend in Terry Johnson, Alex Dixon and Gary Crow. Dixon continues to show why he is one of the top defensive backs in Florida.
Fort Meade was led by Lakevin Camp, Brandon Fulse and McCalebb. Once again the Miners should be very good in 2010. Look for Fulse to have a big time senior season. Camp and McCalebb are both very good prospects. He is a linebacker that is not real big but Brown makes plays for Ft Meade.
Two standouts that do not get much recognition were Will Irwin and Jackson Bannon. Both players were by far two of the better prospects this weekend. Irwin catches everything thrown his way and Bannon should be a linebacker to keep an eye on for 2012.
Others to keep an eye on: Evan Lewis-WR-Sebring, Zach Morris-LB-Sebring, Zack Bullock-WR-Sebring (USF Commit), Alex Sanders-WR-Kathleen, Eric Carter-WR-Kathleen-2013, Aaron Henderson-WR-Sebring, Thornton Watson-WR-Jefferson, Matt Grubb-QB-Sebring, Tikeem Platt-WR-Vanguard, Nick Sanders-WR-Plant, Lamont Damon-LB-Vanguard, Matt Wilkerson-WR-North Marion, Reggie Wilkerson-QB-North Marion-2013, Devin Brant-LB-North Marion, Jake Roddenberry-QB-North Marion-2014, Reno Henderson-OL-Vanguard, Jordan Prestwood-OL-Plant City (Notre Dame Commit), Kilo Fontaine-OL-Tampa Catholic-2012, Dougas Forman-DE/TE-Dunedin, Marcus Clark-Ath.-Chiles-2013, Nico Dem Pierre-QB-Coral Reef-2014, Sterling Wright-DB-Coral Reef, Darius Hall-LB-Coral Reef-2012, Vernon Davis-DB-Coral Reef-2012, Cody Sallis-Ath-Venice, Josh Boyle-WR-Venice-, Danny Dillard-RB-Venice (2012), Jarvis Thomas-DB-Riverview, Jermaine Cokley-Ath-Riverview, Andy Robastelli-TE-Riverview, Tyrone Tyson-S-Riverview and Devonte Williams-QB-Riverview.
