This past weekend Class 1A-4A played their state championship games in Orlando. There were some great performances as Booker T. Washington High School won another title after being down in their game against Jacksonville Raines. Trenton High School won another state title after beating defending state champion Port St. Joe. Trinity Christian has now won another state title and has become one of the premier programs in North Florida. We broke down each of the top performances and came up with an All-ESS Tournament team.

QB-Dan Richardson-Booker T. Washington-The Tornado’s quarterback did not get off to a great start. The freshman threw some early interceptions and struggled as it looked like Booker T. Washington would lose to Raines. In the end his performance in the 2nd half helped lead Booker T. Washington to another state championship game.

RB-Hamp Cheevers-Trenton-12 rushes -201 yards and one touchdown is about as impressive as you will get in a state title game. He averaged over 16 yards per carry as Trenton won another state title. Cheevers may be the most underrated player in the state of Florida.

RB-Hussein Howe-University Christian-22 rushes for 191 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also average over 8 yards per carry. Here is a player that we first watched play as a freshman. He has continued to get better each season. University Christian now gives Duval County three programs who have won multiple state titles over the past few seasons.

WR-Darius Scott-Booker T. Washington-Scott has flown under the radar at Booker t. Washington. His five catch -100 yard performance should get him some looks in January. He has the ability to make the big play which was displayed on Saturday Night.

WR-DJ Matthews-Trinity Christian-Matthews only caught three passes in the state championship game. That being said he made them count. He had over 120 yards and one touchdown. Matthews is one of the top receivers in Florida for the class of 2017 and he showed why with his impressive performance against American Heritage Delray.

WR-Brooks Martin-Trenton-Martin had two catches for 82 yards. He also had two touchdowns in the state title game. On defense, Martin also had an interception.

OL-Derry Danzy-Trenton-One of the big reasons why Trenton had success running the football was because of the play of their offensive line. Danzy is underclassmen who we expect will continue to get better as his performance in the state title game was no fluke.

OL-Solomon Kindley-Jacksonville Raines-One of the big reasons why Raines had so much success running the football was Kindley and Raines offensive line dominated BTW smaller defensive front. Kindley is a massive human being. We expect him to make some sort of impact at the next level.

OL-Willa Pierre-Booker T. Washington– In the 2nd half of their game against Jacksonville Raines, Booker T. Washington offensive line was able to give Richardson time to throw the ball. Pierre was a big reason why they had that success. He will be back in 2016 to help lead one of the best offensive lines in South Florida.

OL-Matt Ahearn-Trinity Christian-One of the big reasons why Trinity Christian was able to control the line of scrimmage was because of their offensive line. Ahearn and his teammates dominated up front.

OL-Jalen Brayboy-Jacksonville Raines-Not only did Kindley play well so do his teammate Brayboy. He helped lead Raines rushing attack that attempted 50+ rushes in the state title game.

DL-Anthony Mitchell-Trinity Christian-Mitchell had 10 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. He was impressive up front and was a big reason why Trinity Christian was able to shut down American Heritage Delray offense.

DL-Richard Gouriage-Cambridge-Here is a kid that even when the game got out of hand was still playing hard. He plays with a non-stop motor and is going to be on everyone’s radar by the 2018 class rolls around. Look for Richard to make an impact over the next two years.

DL-Logan Gunderson-Trinity Christian-Gunderson is a big kid. He played well on the defensive line but it would not surprise us to see him potentially end up on offense in college.

DL-Quinton Brooks-Booker T. Washington– While Booker T. defense struggled at times, Brooks made some big plays late which helped shut down Raines when they needed it the most. He is another player who should start to see some offers roll in.

LB-Michael Pinkney-Raines-The University of Miami commit had 7 tackles and 3 of them were for loss. He also had an interception and had some pass break ups. He was one of the best linebackers we had the opportunity to watch this past weekend.

LB-Eriq Gilyard-Trinity Christian– We first saw Eriq as a freshman over at Ed White. He has since transferred over to Trinity Christian. We thought even back then he was going to be very good. He should be one of the top underclassmen in the Jacksonville area next year.

LB-Titus Curry-University Christian-Curry finished with 7 tackles and was all over the field for University Christian.

DB-Hussein Howe-University Christian-His performance on offense was very impressive. On defense Howe was just as impressive finishing with 9 tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 4 tackles for loss. He was the MVP player in the class 1A-4A title games.

DB-Chamarri Conner-Trinity Christian-Conner had a big interception in the state title game. He also added 6 tackles. For a team that already has two Power Five offers in Wade and Johnson in their secondary it is almost unfair that Conner is also back there.

DB-Tyreke Johnson-Trinity Christian– While he did not fill up the stat sheet this year, Johnson just being on the field allowed Trinity Christian to help out more on the other side. He is a shutdown defender and was a big reason why Heritage struggled to throw the football.

DB-Caleb Young-Cambridge-Young led his team in tackles (12) and had one tackle for loss. He was very active for the Cambridge defense.

Ath.-Otis Anderson-University Christian-While Howe took most of the spot light in University Christian backfield, Anderson chipped in with over 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Ath.-Trey Sanders-Port St Joe-The Sharks did not have many highlights in the title game. One player that did stand out was Trey Sanders. He is only a freshman and we expect him to lead his team back to more state title games by the time his career ends in high school. He had 2 kickoff returns for over 100 yards and touchdown. He also had 3 catches for 52 yards and one touchdown.
