Apopka Holds Off Columbus, wins Florida 8A title

With just over 8 minutes left, Apopka High School was up 30-16 and a feeling that with one more defensive stop the game was going to be out of reach for Columbus.  Although, in just 1:08 minutes Columbus was able to drive down the field and bring the game within one score. The Explorers came up with some big defensive stops, but Columbus’ last chance to score came with just 49 seconds on the clock on their own 5 yard line and were unable to pull off a last minute game scoring drive.

Miami Columbus fought their way to States and gave a valiant fight in the Florida 8A State Title game. Although, Apopka High School and their disciplined offense was ultimately too much for the Explorers to handle to solidify a South Florida sweep of the Florida State Title games. Apopka’s Deshawn Massey ran for a total of 108 yards and 2 touchdowns; Auburn commit, Chandler Cox also contributed with 105 yards rushing with 1 touchdown on the ground and through the air. Columbus’ Austin Maloney became Tucker Beirne’s go to target throughout the night finishing with 8 catches, 111 yards and an unbelievable touchdown catch.

Elite congratulates Rick Darlington on winning his second State title in three years and Columbus’ Coach Chris Merritt for leading the Explorers to a great 2014 season.
